SH RACING’S TOMAS SCHECKTER PROVISIONALLY QUALIFIES 22ND FOR THE 2011 INDIANAPOLIS 500

Tomas Scheckter - Team REDLINE Xtreme 2011 Indy 500

SPEEDWAY, IN – MAY 21, 2011 – KV Racing Technology - SH Racing driver Tomas Scheckter provisionally qualified 22nd today for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana.

Scheckter, 30, driving the No. 07 Team REDLINE Xtreme machine, made two qualifying attempts today. The first occurred early in the session and resulted in a four lap average of 224.117 mph which temporarily put him 10th in the field. However, as other cars began to qualify, Scheckter slid down and eventually was bumped from the grid. On his second attempt, Scheckter found more speed, recording an average of 224.433 mph, which put him back in the field. As qualifying continued, Scheckter once again crept towards the bubble, however heavy rain brought out the yellow flag and the session ended. Scheckter provisionally sits 22nd on the grid, but his final position will not be determined until the end of qualifying tomorrow.

Commenting on how qualifying went, Scheckter said, "Today, once again, as always at the Indianapolis 500, it has been a very stressful day. Everybody on the KV Racing Technology - SH Racing team did a great job finding that last bit of speed that we needed for qualifying. Today was the quickest we have ever gone this month. My car was loose, but that's what we needed to do. We are still not completely safe and in the race and need to make sure we are prepared tomorrow, but overall I am happy with the today."

Scheckter, is trying to qualify for his 10th Indy 500 and compete in an IZOD IndyCar Series race for the 10th consecutive season. In nine previous races at the Brickyard, Scheckter has a best qualifying position of 10th (in 2002, 2004 and 2007) and a best finish of fourth in 2003 (finished seventh in 2007).. In his inaugural Indy 500, in 2002, Scheckter led 85 laps and was leading the race as late as lap 173 of the 200 lap contest when an incident in Turn 4 knocked him out of the race. Never-the-less he was named the Indianapolis 500 co-Rookie of the Year. He has led the Indy 500 on three separate occasions totaling 153 laps.

Qualifying for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 will resume tomorrow with “Bump Day”. Once the final nine spots have been filled tomorrow, bumping can begin with the slowest car in the field. The 100 th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500 will be held Sunday, May 29. It will be broadcast live on ABC beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET.
